This White Oak Owl is an exercise in revealing the hidden life of the tree. I sourced the wood from a rare root burl, resulting in a tight, complex grain pattern that is unique to this piece.
Standing at 3.25 inches high with a 1.5-inch diameter, this is a small sculpture where every detail matters. I enhanced the piece with wood burning (pyrography) to highlight the figure and give the owl its distinct features.
The challenge of working with such dense burl wood is matched by the reward of seeing the deep, swirling pattern of the White Oak revealed.
I finished the wood with a Tung Oil and Orange Oil mix to protect the carving and intensify the natural tones of the wood and the burned details.
