"Memories of Korea" – Ebonized Apple Wood Vessel
"Memories of Korea" is a deeply personal piece born from a family trip to South Korea and a visit to the Korean National Museum. Heavily inspired by the ancient pottery and early bronze work vessels on display, this piece borrows from that historic shape language to create something that feels less like a replica and more like a discovered artifact.
Translating these ancient, classical forms into a woodturning context required creative problem-solving, particularly when figuring out the work holding for the intricate shapes. Turned from apple wood, the vessel features a flared rim, a bulbous body detailed with sharp, rhythmic accent bands , and an cutout footed base reminiscent of ancient bronze stands. To capture an aged, historic texture, the wood underwent a hot ebonizing treatment. The final result is a striking vessel that beautifully bridges ancient Eastern history with modern, hands-on craft.
Materials: Apple wood (Endgrain)
Process: Hot ebonized and oiled
Dimensions: 3.75 inches in diameter, 4.5 inches tall
Features: Design inspired by historic Korean museum artifacts, uniquely carved open-work base, and textured detailing.
