A Live Edge Honey Locust Form

This vase is truly a showpiece for the color and character of the wood itself. I turned it from Honey Locust, a wood I love for its incredible range of color—from deep golden brown to pale yellow. The way the light catches those tones gives the entire form a rich, warm glow.

My Process & The Piece:

  • Color & Grain: The Honey Locust wood has a fascinating, flowing grain pattern. I chose a piece where the natural color variation and streaks give it depth and complexity.

  • The Live Edge: I preserved the original rough bark around the entire opening, contrasting the smooth, polished body of the vase with the dark, natural texture of the tree's outer layer. This makes the opening feel organic and unique.

  • The Form: This vessel is substantial, with a graceful shape that sits well on a table or shelf. It's a statement piece meant to be appreciated from every angle.

📝 About Honey Locust Wood

  • Ancient History: Botanists believe the sweet seed pods of this tree evolved to be eaten and spread by long-extinct mammals like the mastodon and giant ground sloth.

  • Durability: Honey Locust is a very hard and durable wood, often used for fence posts because of its natural resistance to decay.

  • Distinct Color: The rich, amber heartwood is known for its dramatic color variation, providing natural streaks of gold, tan, and brown.

Product Details

  • Size: This vase is 5.75 inches in diameter at its widest point and stands 4.25 inches tall.
