This White Oak Owl is the smallest of the series. I worked with a section of root burl wood, carefully shaping the sculpture while preserving the dense, complex figure of the Oak.
Standing just 2.5 inches high with a 1.5-inch diameter. Its small scale means the swirling grain pattern is intensely concentrated, drawing the eye in for a closer look.
I enhanced the piece with wood burning (pyrography) to define the owl's features and complement the natural depth of the burl.
I finished the sculpture with a protective Tung Oil and Orange Oil mix to ensure the carving and the intense figure are preserved for many years.
